Compost, Recycled or Landfill Art
Create artwork prior to the event & bring it to compete and show off!
Artwork must be created entirely with objects from only one category.
Group submissions are welcome!
Compostable means that something is biodegradable. Here’s a quick list of what qualifies:
- Grass clippings
- Tree leaves
- Vegetable food scraps ( coffee grounds, lettuce, potato peels, banana peels, avocado skins, etc.)
- Black and white newspaper
- Printer paper
- Most disease free yard waste
- Cardboard
- Vegetarian animal manure (e.g. cows, horses, rabbits, hamsters, etc.) – though we are not suggesting to make your art out of this!
- Wood shavings or sawdust

Any art that is made from things that are not compostable and cannot be recycled will be landfill. This will also be the category if artwork is made by combining more than one category.
When putting your artwork together try to be mindful of what you are using to do so. For instance, to recycle paper you need to remove paperclips and staples first. If hot glue is used in the creation, then you would need to remove it before recycling your artwork.
We encourage you to make something that can be used later on if you plan to combine materials from several categories.
At the end of the contest you can choose to keep your artwork
or dispose of it at the Sound Disposal Collection Truck.
Learn how garbage is sorted in the Trash or Treasure Sorting Game.
